This confident, contemporary home is set amongst tall eucalypts on the shores of Smiths Lake on the Midnorth Coast of NSW. Located on a steep, south facing site, the house has been cleverly designed to respond to the sun’s path, prevailing winds, key views and the existing topography.

The use of timber as a key element of the design was important in blending the home with the site and providing a warmth to compliment the rammed earth walls. Timber offers a tactility that is a soothing and comfortable presence to the occupants. Aside from the sustainability issues, timber and earth reveal the natural process of aging and weathering. This patina can evoke an intuitive understanding of the flow of natural systems for occupants of a space.

To provide thermal mass several rammed earth walls were introduced. These help to moderate the internal temperatures in summer and winter. The combination of the earth with the timbers creates a truly natural feeling inside and outside the home.
